Kolb's cycle of learning

This is a foundational framework in teacher training and pedagogy.

David Kolb's experiential learning cycle explains how real understanding is formed through experience, reflection, and application. Designed to empower homeschoolers and educators with genuine educational theory, along with My own educational helpers!

1. Concrete experience and reflective observation

Learning begins when an individual encounters a tangible event or practical challenge.

Rather than passive reception, the learner directly engages with reality, and then Immediately following the event comes reflective observation: taking a step back to review what actually happened, noticing nuances, and examining outcomes without premature judgment.

2. Abstract conceptualisation and active experimentation

In this phase, reflection crystallises into clear concepts and logical rules. The learner forms their own conclusions, deducing why things worked the way they did.

Next they then move naturally into active experimentation, testing their newly formed theories in novel situations to see if their conclusions hold true in practice.

Empowering the home educator

Understanding Kolb's cycle allows homeschooling parents and independent educators to move beyond rote repetition.

By understanding how the human mind naturally processes reality into intellect, you can structure lessons that cultivate genuine self-direction.
