Exploring 'Half and Half': understanding numbers

And this is a very quick brief, about how the rich get richer, as the poor get poorer, is worth knowing.

What is 'half and half'?

It's very simple;

Starting at 1, just count 1 to 5 using the fingers on one hand.

Next, starting at 5, count to 10 in the same way.

Now simply find out why you have three fingers between 1 and 5, but 4 fingers between 5 and 10, when 5 is the halfway number 🤔

so just to be sure:

            1,

2,

3, 

4, 

            5.

6,

7,

8,

9,

            10.

There really is no trick, but it does beg the following questions in some heads:

 

Is 5 really half of 10?

 

Does  2×4 really =8?

Does2×3 really =6? 

Or should there be halves used?

 

Now, obviously the 5 gets missed twice: once on the first count, and again on the second count, because we always start counting in this manner, similarly to days of the week  with the second digit, not including it.

But it's truly a just bit of fun to make you think more carefully about numbers, and how quickly they can be manipulated if wanted.
