Water: a truly unique compound

Explore the extraordinary properties of water, the very essence of life. Discover why this common substance is anything but ordinary, and challenge your understanding of its fundamental role in our world. I believe that understanding water is understanding a core part of existence.

The extraordinary nature of water

Water, scientifically known as H₂O, is far more complex than it appears. Its unique molecular structure, comprising of 2x Hydrogen Molecules and 1x Oygen molecule, gives it astonishing properties that are vital for all known forms of life. From its high specific heat capacity to its ability to act as a universal solvent, water defies many conventional scientific expectations. I believe should delve into the fascinating science behind this essential compound.

Dispelling the common myth: water and sea levels

One of the most widespread Lies, which will of course be back soon as summer approaches, is that water itself, when displaced, directly raises sea levels.

However, fundamental physics dictates that objects floating in water, like icebergs, displace their own weight in water. When they melt, this displaced volume is already accounted for, meaning, quite simply, melting ice cannot contribute to a rise in sea levels.

Try it yourself at home: fill a drinking glass, to the brim with ice cubes out of your freezer, next fill the spaces in the glass with tap water, but do not overfill the glass, instead carefully stand it on a new, clean, piece of kitchen towel. Come back again tomorrow and see how dry your kitchen towel is. This is a simple experiment for the kids to be involved with 👍

Understanding this principle is crucial for accurately assessing many environmental "changes". Even natural ones.

On this page, I hope to clarify this, showing that water does not raise sea levels simply by melting existing floating ice.

Understanding water, means understanding our world better.

I believe in empowering individuals with knowledge that builds a strong foundation for understanding the world better.

My educational resources, including this page, are designed, and presented to stimulate critical thinking and challenge preconceived notions.

By understanding the true nature of water, and researching more connected physics, from molecular structures, to Atomic Physics, you'll gain a much clearer and correct perspective on many of today's "scientific" claims.

Don't just take my word for it as a Professor of sciences, there are still other real scientists out there (plus I'm not mad yet)  👍
