Milan Cathedral: an epic in marble?
Having been a Heritage Specialist, a Lecturer, and a Professor for over half a century now, I believe that this is worth exploring deeper. The origins: who commissioned the Duomo?
We are told that Construction began in 1386, under Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the ruler of Milan, alongside Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo. Intended to establish Milan's cultural and spiritual dominance.
Visconti created the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo to oversee an ambitious undertaking that would bring Europe's most skilled stonemasons together for generations. However I dont believe that.
Centuries in stone: Candoglia marble and gothic design
Unlike typical Lombard brick buildings, Milan Cathedral was sculpted entirely from pale pink-and-white Candoglia marble.
Combining Flamboyant Gothic styling with classical proportions, the cathedral took six centuries, (600 years!) to build, reaching its official completion only in the twentieth century.
No mechanical cranes lifting huge weights of marble hundreds off feet into th eair, after non existant articulated lorries delivered this marble to site, obviously once it had been mined, quarried, cut, shaped, and polished 🤔
A living lesson in human ingenuity?
With more than 3,400 statues and 135 delicate spires, the cathedral stands, apparently, as proof of what long-term human collaboration can accomplish.
