Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Beauvais
Is this a daring masterpiece of Gothic architecture, or maybe evidence of lost architectural mastery and rewritten history? Explore this case study on the towering heights, enigmatic engineering, and collapse of France's most ambitious cathedral, alledgedly built over 700 years ago!

Reaching impossible heights
We are told that this was commissioned in the 13th century following a fire in 1225, the choir of Saint-Pierre de Beauvais was engineered to reach an unprecedented vault height of over 48 metres. We are told that it was constructed from precision-cut local limestone, iron tie-rods, and soaring flying buttresses.
The monument pushed stone masonry beyond what standard medieval textbooks claim was possible.
Now, I straight away have a problem with the 'Iron tie rods', simply because in the earlier days of cavity walls found in the late 1800's, and sorry English Heritage, but you are wrong, I have worked on, deconstructed and repaired many where the Iron cavity wall ties had disintegrated due to lime alone being too 'acidic' for iron, which is why Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) was added to the mortar mixes, to raise the alkalinity of mortar mixes, and prevent premature structural failure. Yet OPC wasn't even invented, in England, until 1843!
Are you starting to see that the history we are taught appears to have quite obviously been altered yet?

The collapses and unanswered questions
And rgere's more to this fairytale; apparently in 1284, sections of the choir vaults collapsed, leading to extensive restructuring with additional columns and denser rib networks.
Centuries later, a colossal 153-metre lantern tower was completed in 1569, only to collapse dramatically in 1573.
The nave was never completed, leaving an astonishing unfinished shell that defies conventional explanations of medieval capability, purpose, and construction logic.

Challenging accepted narratives
Alledgedly, beyond the immense stonework, Beauvais houses complex astronomical clocks and harmonic proportions that suggest sophisticated mathematical and energetic systems.
However I challenge mainstream curricula personally that reduce such marvels to simplistic folklore.
