Chairman Mao: a complex figure

Chairman Mao Zedong stands as one of the most influential and controversial figures of the 20th century. His leadership profoundly reshaped China and had a significant impact on global politics. Here, we encourage you to explore his life, policies, and the lasting effects of his era.

Over 70yrs ago Chairman Mao ordered the killing of sparrows throughout China because, according to him, they were eating grain intended for human consumption.
The Chinese people went out in their droves, banging pots and pans together to scare the sparrows away, but the sparrows got tired, had to land for a rest, so then the chinese people got a bit of free sparrow for their dinner.

However, Mao later had to buy 2 million sparrows from Russia to eat the locusts and other bugs that had moved in and were devouring the other human food crops in the absence of their natural predators; the sparrows.
This led to the famine in China which resulted in the deaths of up to 55million people through starvation.
Nature provides for very good reasons, it is certainly not for kids to think they know better.

A butterfly flaps it's wings!

The story of Chairman Mao and China offers a powerful reminder: always think critically before acting. History is filled with examples of well-intentioned actions leading to unforeseen consequences. We invite everyone to ponder the lessons learned from this complex period and apply them to contemporary challenges.
