The myth of Narcissus

Narcissus, was a handsome youth from Greek mythology, and his tale serves as the foundation for the psychological concept of narcissism.

Very briefly: Cursed to fall in love with his own reflection, he wasted away by a pool under his own delusional thoughts, unable to tear himself away. This tragic story offers profound insights into self-absorption and the significant dangers of having a self inflated ego.

Narcissism: a look at its mythological roots

If you journey back in time in the ancient world, you'll uncover the origins of narcissism, a concept deeply rooted in Greek mythology. Understand the story that gave birth to this modern term decribing a character trait, and reflect on its enduring lessons about self-perception and external influence.

Beyond the reflection

"Narcississism" has been a 'hot topic' in recent years, with a lot of people not knowing anything about this recognised trait, which is a recognised physycological illness, originating in ancient times, which was first recognised in Greek mythology.

Whilst the myth's origins are ancient, its themes resonate strongly in our modern world, especially through the growth in social media platforms, where people have been encouraged to play to an audience that they cannot physically see.

Understanding the core narrative of Narcissus helps us to recognise patterns of behaviour in others we often might hear, and see

I believe that this should  highlight the importance of maintaining healthy self-awareness. It's a reminder that true understanding extends beyond mere surface appearances.

Don't be controlled by external perceptions

The story of Narcissus should encourage an understanding of how influences can, and do, easily shape our perceptions, so avoid being unwhittingly controlled by external opinions or assumptions, or even sometimes, our own skewed self-image.

I believe in fostering critical thought and understanding the deeper 'why' behind things, with regard to psychology. Explore some quick insights into psychology to begin deepening your understanding.
